Program Notes:
Left out is a set of moveable miniatures.
Each movement of this piece is a saying that has a key component left out of it. The first movement’s original saying is “A breath of fresh air,” in this movement then breath is the element that is the focus. In the second movement the original saying is “The half the truth is often a whole lie.” Therefore, this movement’s focus in the half valve technique. In the third movement, the original saying is for remembering vowels in English “A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y.” In this movement, movement between sung vowel sounds is the focus. Just as the Tuba is often left out of many ensembles and pieces, I wrote this solo Tuba piece to focus on each purposeful omission.
